Quite a bit has happened since i updated the blog last. My Asparagus (3 of the 4 crowns so far) has grown, and is currently in the Fern-like Foliage stage. I removed three of my four Romaine Lettuce plants and harvested the Lettuce leaves (bagged them and stored them). My Bon-Vivant and Great Lakes Lettuce is growing fantastically well and I plan to harvest some of the Bon-Vivant for salad this coming week. I see Strawberries growing about the size of a nickel and are still white, which is exciting.
My carrots have been a bit of a disappointment. I think i thinned them to early because a lot of the ones left after thinning died off so i have two very strong carrots, and a few decent others. I replanted the parts of the Carrot row with new seeds and am just now getting germination.
Down on the other end of the bed has been interesting. First the row of Green Bean bush came in very nicely, the leaves are dying off, which has had me worried something is wrong, but the knowledge that first leaves die off to give way to new growth has to sink in deeper so I will recognize it as normalcy.
The next row is Cucumber bush which has been difficult. Because their seeds need to be planted 1/8 deep in the soil (so basically a very light dusting over soil over the seeds), getting them to germinate has been a pain. I planted them well but when i came to water using the watering-can, they would move around and come to the top of the soil. I would see them and re-plant them. All in all, three of the seeds bummed out and did nothing. However the rest are growing nicely and i have some extra Cucumber Bush plants in pea-pots that i can transplant that are on just about the same growing time-line.
